5 Day Komodo Trip

One Day in Labuan Bajo Before Your Boat: The Day-0 Plan

By Maria Goreti · July 3, 2026

With one day in Labuan Bajo before your Komodo boat, do this:
check in near the harbour, walk the waterfront and Kampung Ujung
fish-grill strip, climb (or drive) to a west-facing viewpoint for the
archipelago sunset, buy your last supplies at a proper supermarket, eat
early, and sleep early — because the whole point of Day 0 is boarding
your boat rested at 08:00.
This is the exact pre-departure plan
we send to guests on the 5-day Komodo trip, refined over
300+ departures since 2016. Labuan Bajo is not a destination that needs
a week; it’s a harbour town that rewards one well-spent evening.

First, Understand What
Labuan Bajo Is

A decade ago this was a fishing village with a dive shop. Today it’s
one of Indonesia’s five government-designated “Super Priority
Destinations,” with an upgraded airport, a rebuilt waterfront promenade,
and a marina — the state tourism push has been explicit and
well-documented (source: Ministry
of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia
). The
result is a compact town of two personalities: a working Bugis harbour
at dawn, a traveller strip of grills, coffee, and dive shops by night.
Everything a visitor needs sits along one 2-kilometre waterfront road,
Jalan Soekarno-Hatta. You do not need a scooter for Day 0. You need
comfortable sandals.

The Day-0 Timeline

Afternoon — arrive and position yourself
(14:00–16:00).
Fly in from Bali on an afternoon rotation (why
the evening-before arrival beats a morning-of flight is covered in our
flight-timing guide). LBJ airport to the harbour area is a 15-minute,
~IDR 100k taxi. Stay walkably close to the harbour: guesthouses and
mid-range hotels cluster on the hill just behind the waterfront (great
views, 10-minute walk), or pay more for the handful of harbour-front
hotels. If your trip is the boat-plus-land version — our land-and-sea combo route — this
same neighbourhood is where your land nights will be, so treat Day 0 as
a reconnaissance you’ll thank yourself for.

Late afternoon — the supply run (16:00–17:00). One
proper supermarket stop: reef-safe sunscreen if you failed to bring it
(limited stock — bring it), seasickness tablets (pharmacies stock
dimenhydrinate as Antimo), cash from an ATM (the last reliable
ATMs of your trip), snacks if you have opinions, and a sarong from the
waterfront shops if you forgot one. Our full boat-bag list is in the
packing guide; Day 0 is your last chance to fix its gaps.

Golden hour — the sunset that previews your trip
(17:15–18:30).
Labuan Bajo faces dead west over a bay scattered
with islands, and its sunsets are legitimately among Indonesia’s best.
Options by energy level:

Evening — eat at Kampung Ujung (18:30–20:30). At the
north end of the waterfront, the Kampung Ujung night grills set out the
day’s catch on ice: pick your fish, agree the price per kilo, and it
arrives grilled over coconut husk with rice, water spinach, and three
sambals. It’s the correct first meal of a Komodo trip — the same snapper
and tuna you’ll be eating at anchor for the next five days, at local
prices (a whole grilled fish dinner runs IDR 80–150k). Prefer a proper
restaurant? The strip has solid Indonesian and Western options and
surprisingly good espresso — Flores is coffee country, and the town’s
cafés take it seriously.

Night — early to bed (by 22:00). This is the
discipline item. Labuan Bajo has bars and they are fun and they are how
people board boats hungover into their first crossing. The Padar sunrise
climb on Day 2 of the route starts before 05:00.
Sleep.

Morning of
Departure (If You Have a Spare Hour)

Boats board 07:30–08:30. If you wake early — and jetlagged guests
always do — the single best hour in town is the fish market and
harbour at dawn (05:30–06:30)
: the night boats unloading, the
bird’s-nest of jetties, proper kopi from a stall. It costs nothing and
it’s the most authentic thing in Labuan Bajo. Then breakfast at your
hotel, checkout, and a two-minute walk to the pier where we meet
you.

What NOT to Spend Day 0 On

Honest triage, because one day is one day:

If Your Day 0 Becomes Day 0.5

Late-afternoon arrival? Compress: supply run first (shops shut by
21:00), sunset from the nearest café, Kampung Ujung dinner, done. The
plan degrades gracefully — the only non-negotiables are supplies,
dinner, and sleep.

Slot This Into the Full Plan

Day 0 is the soft landing that makes Day 1 effortless — and if Labuan
Bajo charms you (it does that), the land-and-sea combo gives you two
proper land nights to do the caves, the waterfalls, and the slow cafés
without stealing time from the boat. Tell me your arrival flight and
I’ll confirm your Day-0 plan and hotel pick against your departure’s
boarding time — send it through the inquiry page
or straight to WhatsApp at wa.me/6281139414563. I live here;
hotel and dinner questions get answered with names, not links.

departures — and still eats at Kampung Ujung more nights than his doctor
would prefer.
